It's time for the Designer's Christmas Market in Oslo!

Posted by Amanda Villaruel | | |
It was about time that I visited the renowned Designer's Christmas Market in my home town Oslo. Here you can buy quirky stuff, practical stuff and quality stuff from various Scandinavian designers.

If you want something unique or you're tired of trendy stuff, this is the market for you :-)

The Designer's Market is the paradise of quirky and colors.

From cute things like DIY match boxes and hand-made jewelry, to furniture such as coffee tables made from old road signs. The slow fashion brand Vera & William was also present at the market, Black Rat that designs sustainable street wear, and the ethical brand WayaWaya that offer bags, wallets and iPad cases that are all handmade in Zambia.

I stuck with my plan - which was looking for gift paper tags for this year's Christmas presents.

OK, I also bought one of the match boxes in the picture shown above, and the cutest tea bag holder I've ever laid my eyes on ;-)

Lovely porcelain earrings!

I fell in love with these porcelain earrings by the Norwegian designer Maria Ianke, who specializes in ceramics. Every piece is made by hand, and she mainly uses porcelain, but also some clay in her jewelry collection.

As you can see the hall was packed with people, and the queues long. It was packed, but I didn't feel I was choking on others' presence. I thought it was quite a pleasant shopping experience!

You'll also find cute illustrations specially made for children, DIY boards that can be used as bread cutting boards or tapas boards, shopping tote bags made from cotton and linen, kitchen towels, nice ceramic work, elegant notebooks with faux leather covers and tea bag holders!

No Christmas market is complete if you can't find Christmas scented candles, as shown on the picture above. There's also something for the hubbies such as the "Man candles", that smelled like a late night-out with the guys :-)

Do I recommend the market?

No doubt in my mind! If you love craft work and independent design, this is the place for you! Whether you're looking for a present for your dad, uncle, friend or your colleague - you'll find something here ;-)

Where is the market: The Norwegian center of architecture and design (Hausmannsgate 16 close to Torggata).

When: An annual event. In 2014, the market is held from December 6-7.

Tips: Bring cash! Most of the booths only accept cash.
