A vintage feeling: My favorite second hand shops in Berlin

Posted by Amanda Villaruel | |
Hunting for second-hand and vintage treasures became nearly an obsession during my three-week stay in Berlin. Where would I find them? :-) I searched dozens of sites online, but in the end I decided to get out there and hope that I would bump into a nice vintage shop.

I ended up visiting 15 stores in mostly east Berlin. Here are my top five :-)

A vintage feeling: my favorite second hand shops in Berlin

Here it goes - my five favorite second-hand and vintage stores in Berlin:
1) Stiefelkombinat (Mitte)
2) Anziehend (Friedrichshain)
3) Kleidermarkt Garage (Schöneberg)
4) Made in Berlin (Mitte)
5) Sing Blackbird (Neukölln)

1. Stiefelkombinat

Stiefelkombinat tops my list because of its amazing selection of pull-overs, cardigans, blouses and accessories. The store offers you colorful vintage fashion from 1930s to 1990s, but many of the clothes are not too whimsy or flowery. You don't have to be a hipster or a hippie to wear them.

As a Scandinavian who enjoys her classic cuts, I could actually imagine myself wearing a lot of their clothes. I absolutely enjoy colors, but with a classic cut so the clothes can be used over a longer period of time.

To my surprise I found plenty of tops and blouses in this category.

The garments hang nicely along the left wall, while the shoes and accessories are presented on your right hand. I don't know how they have done it, but even if they have a lot of stuff, it doesn't feel cluttered at all ;-)

Where: Torstrasse 41, Berlin-Mitte. Take the U2 to Rosa-Luxembourg Platz.

2. Anziehand Second-hand

There's a handful of second-hand and vintage stores in Niederbarnimstrasse, but Anziehand is one of those you get curious about because the store looks inviting and de-cluttered. A really nice shop with carefully curated modern second-hand clothing, mostly blouses, tops and jackets, but also accessories and shoes.

It's also worth mentioning that a couple of meters from Anziehand, you'll find a vintage interior shop called PIRA-X. Another good reason to visit this street in Friedrichshain :-)

Where: Niederbarnimstrasse 16, Berlin-Friedrichshain. Take the U5 to Frankfurter Tor (if you want to stop by Humana first) or directly to Samariterstrasse, which is a bit closer to Niederbarnistrasse.

3. Kleidermarkt Garage

Shopping at Garage is literally like shopping at a garage sale, but the place is huge!

Every corner of the shop is packed with clothes, accessories and shoes from every fashion period, which makes it exciting, but also a bit overwhelming when you enter the store. Garage is a place where you have to really tune in - to find what you're looking for. But the cheap second-hand and vintage makes it worth while :-)

Fortunately, they've made it a little easier for shoppers by organizing the clothes - into dresses, t-shirts, pull-overs and leather jackets. The store is on my top five list because of the incredible selection of dresses and skirts. If I had the patience, I would go through everything and I'm sure that I would have found something.

Instead, I found a vintage wool cardigan at €7. The genius part of shopping here is that you pay by the weight.

Trust me, you're going to need one good hour at Garage. Be sure to make a mental note of what you're looking for, or else you'll be walking around - feeling like you'll drown in the clothes any minute.

Wednesdays stand for Happy Hour - you get 30% discount from 11.00-13.00. Buckle up!! :-)

Where: Ahornstrasse 2, Berlin-Schöneberg. Take the U1/U2/U3/U4 to Nollendorfplatz.

4. Made in Berlin

Made in Berlin is one of the most popular vintage stores in Berlin, as you'll find cool, casual and carefully selected vintage clothing from the 1960s to 1990s.

It's pricey, but you won't find crappy vintage clothing in here. The store is quite organized and the first thing that will catch your attention, is the leather jackets hanging on the wall. Not only will you find leather products, but also Levi's jeans, denim jumpers, dresses and tops.

Worth the visit!

PS. Happy Hour on Tuesdays from 12.00-15.00 where you can get 20% discount.

Where: Neue Schönhauser strasse 19, Berlin-Mitte. Take the U8 to Weinmeisterstrasse.

5. Sing Blackbird

Visiting Sing Blackbird in Neukölln/Kreuzberg was like a breath of fresh air. On the inside, it looks like any high-fashion store where each garment hangs nicely on the rack and is organized by color.

Here you'll find clothes, shoes and jewelry from the 1970s until the 1990s. I found a neat skirt and a chic blouse, but unfortunately too small. Maybe next time ;-)

If you need a break from the shopping, be sure to try their vegan food!

Where: Sanderstrasse 11, Berlin-Neukölln. Take the U8 to Schönleinstrasse.
